A slope may have been one of the elements that made you gravitate toward your property. Nevertheless, not many homeowners consider that landscaping a slope would be far different from landscaping flat land. This does not mean that it is impossible, though. All you need to do is ensure you are using the appropriate techniques and landscaping methods to ensure that your property does not gradually succumb to erosion. Here are some of the handy tips that you could use when landscaping a sloping property.

Tip 1: Ensure the land is fortified

The primary concern when it comes to gardening and landscaping a slope is that the ground will be uneven. These ups and downs which characterise the slope can be quite difficult to work with. Moreover, you cannot ascertain how sturdy the earth is. If your slope has some parts that comprise of loose soil, it will be prone to pooling of water, which pose the risk of a mudslide. Thus, the first thing that you need to do before you landscape a slope is to ensure the land has been appropriately fortified. The various ways of doing this include:

  • Constructing retaining walls that function to hold back the soil on the slope.

  • Laying down pavers that will ensure that ground is not easily eroded. When installing your pavers it is best to ensure that they are adequately spaced. This functions to ensure sufficient drainage as the water will be able to seep directly into the ground.

  • Planting woody plants that have deep root systems. These roots will secure the soil, making it harder for the ground to succumb to erosion.

When fortifying your sloping land, you could choose to use one technique or employ multiple methods simultaneously. This will largely depend on how severe the slope is.

Tip 2: Use the right form of irrigation

When it comes to residential irrigation, sprinkler systems tend to be the most popular option homeowners choose. However, sprinklers would not be ideal for a slope as they are more susceptible to causing runoff. This runoff will inevitably erode the soil, undercutting your attempts to grow healthy plants. Instead, you should opt for a drip irrigation system. This system is designed to ensure water slowly penetrates the ground exactly, where it is needed. It also decreases the risk of runoff, which ensures that the ground will not shift. The duration at which you leave your drip irrigation system on would depend on the degree of your individual slope, thus it is best to consult with a landscaping contractor.
